CRICKET GROUND

"TELEGRAPH OFFICES"

CIRCULAR DATE STAMPS

Between 1870 and 1912, the interest in results of CRICKET MATCHES increased as the Railways expanded, and the POST OFFICE was quick to use the TELEGRAPH Service as a means of getting fast reports back from the ground to the Sports Editors of NEWSPAPERS, whose readers were avidly waiting to hear about the actions of their favourite players in the matches.

The reports were sent by TELEGRAM, which needed to be paid for, creating an immediate source of valuable revenue for the POST OFFICE, who were happy to pay the newly created "mobile" staff, (who travelled from London, by train), their basic wage - plus a hefty additional sevenpence per hour bonus.

To prove that these TELEGRAMS had been paid for, current postage stamps were affixed to the Telegram Forms, to the value of the "wordage" of each message. These stamps were then cancelled with a circular date stamp (c.d.s.) specially designed for the Ground in question.

In most cases, these "Cricket Ground" postmarks are exceedingly rare!

In conjunction with the POSTAL MUSEUM, who very kindly gave permission to reproduce the postmarks from their "Date-stamp Impression Registers", a total of 30 different postmarks have been recorded and these are illustrated below, as they would have been, on higher value postage stamps, at the time of their original production. Some of these Registers were destroyed by Fire and therefore there may yet be other examples from some Grounds which have still not been discovered!

Because these date-stamps were used only on TELEGRAM forms, and never on normal letters posted at the Ground, to find a "strike" on lower face value stamps is very rare. The telegraph forms were, of course, retained by the Post Office for a period before being destroyed and the cancelled stamps should never have been released to the general collector - but all systems are fallible! so the 30 "strikes" which are illustrated give a true impression of what could have been.

I hope you enjoy seeing this research and wish you every success should you decide to look for actual examples to add to your Cricket Collection - but be warned, specimens are quite expensive and are few and far between.

HAPPY HUNTING!!!

A.Melville-Brown, President, Cricket Philatelic Society

IN AN EFFORT TO KEEP COLLECTORS UP-TO-DATE WITH "FINDS" OF THESE RARE cds I WILL ADD TO THE APPROPRIATE TYPE NUMBERS ANY "NEWS" OF TYPES DISCOVERED.

IT SEEMS ODD THAT WITHIN DAYS OF THIS NEW WEB-SITE BEING LAUNCHED, TWO NEW EXAMPLES WERE "NOTICED" BY OUR MEMBERS.

IS IT THAT COLLECTORS ARE NOW MORE AWARE OF THE SCOPE OF THESE EARLY POSTMARKS?
